How to create and publish a website

Open Websites, choose Create a website, pick a template or a blank page, edit it in the visual editor, run the checks, and choose Publish. The site goes live at a free platform address.

Steps

  1. Start the wizard

    Open Websites and choose to create a website. The wizard has four short steps: About your site, How to start, Pages and Create.

  2. Pick a start

    Choose a template from one of the 14 categories, or start with a blank page. You can change everything later.

  3. Edit the page

    Open the editor. Click text to change it, drag sections in from the Add tab, and use the Styles tab for colours and fonts. Preview the page as a phone, a tablet and a desktop.

  4. Set each page's title and description

    Open Page settings and SEO for the page and write a clear title and description.

  5. Check the page

    The editor lists problems it finds with accessibility, SEO, links and performance. Fix what it points out.

  6. Publish

    Choose Publish. A dialog confirms the checks passed and shows the address the site will go live at, then choose Publish now.

Good to know

  • Use a staging copy to try bigger changes before you publish them.
  • Backups can be restored if a change goes wrong.
